What’s Next? “Transportation Today and Tomorrow” Focus of September Policy Seminar

Global warming, rising fuel prices, international competition, congestion pricing, demographic shifts…What’s really next?  WTS presents Transportation Today and Tomorrow, a dynamic policy seminar to explore transportation issues in an ever-changing transportation world Thursday, September 11, at the Washington Marriott Hotel, Washington, DC.    Examining major trends – from international commerce to modal neutrality to ‘next gen’ aviation – leading industry experts will present their latest thoughts, findings and outlooks on the future of transportation at this pivotal moment in time.  As presenter Robert Puentes observed in 2006, “…the question…is not whether we grow, but how we grow, where we grow and what we grow.”

In the opening session, “Mediums At-Large:  Foretelling Transportation’s Tomorrow,” panelists will examine:

* “The Global Transportation Economy” – Peter Tirschwell, Senior Advisor, Journal of Commerce
* “Demographic Patterns Affecting Transportation in the U.S.” – Robert Puentes, Deputy Director, Brookings Institution and author of A Bridge to Somewhere: Rethinking American Transportation for the 21st Century
* “Technology Trends – Fuel, Vehicles and Technology” – Peter Sweatman, Director, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute

For insights into International Commerce: Worth Its Freight in Gold, the discussion will feature:
* Shree Beverly, North American Physical Distribution Outbound Operations Manager, Procter & Gamble
* Lillian Borrone, Chair of the Eno Transportation Foundation, and Director, STV, Inc.
* Susan Harper, Minister-Counselor, Economic and Trade Policy, Embassy of Canada to the U.S.

For a look at Preaching the Green:  Technological Innovations in Vehicles, Aviation and Roadways, experts include:
* Cheri Heramb, Transportation Commissioner, City of Chicago
* Marion C. Blakey, President and CEO, Aerospace Industries Association and former Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration
* Bill Reinert,  Toyota Corporation

The concluding discussion, Surface Transportation Decision-Making:  Feds, Funds and Fairness will feature:
* Susan Binder, Staff to the U.S. Senate Committee on Public Works
* David Warm, Executive Director, Mid-America Regional Council, Kansas City, Missouri
* Shelley Poticha, President and CEO, Reconnecting America

Other highlights of the day’s events will include opening remarks by Mortimer Downey, chairman, PB Consult, Inc., and former deputy administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton, member, U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, will deliver a luncheon keynote presentation.  Sponsors of the Policy Seminar include STV and Michael Baker Corp.  For information on attending or sponsoring or to register for the event, click here.

Lillian Borrone To Receive WTS Lifetime Achievement Award:  Transportation Pioneer and Industry Leader

Following the Policy Seminar September 11, WTS will honor Lillian Borrone with the second Lifetime Achievement Award as a longtime industry pioneer and pivotal transportation influencer and leader.  A recognized expert in practically every mode transportation, her accomplishments are only surpassed by her limitless energy and desire to improve our nation’s transportation.  It is a great privilege for WTS to name Borrone as this year’s recipient.

Parsons Brinckerhoff will sponsor a reception to honor Lillian Borrone at 6:00 p.m. at the Washington Marriott Hotel.  WTS will hold the dinner in Borrone’s honor following the reception at 7:00 p.m.  For information on registration or logistics, click here.

Dear WTS Members:

“Meilleures salutations” from Lyon!  I am settling into my new position at INTERPOL and life in one of the most beautiful regions of France.  As you all know, transition is not without its challenges.  In this instance, six hours time difference from the US, a foreign language, a new organization and the search for the right apartment.  On the other hand, there is the wonderful challenge of choosing from 400 varieties of cheese… and one of the unexpected benefits of this move has been the opportunity to reduce my own carbon footprint.  The hassle of driving in a busy city (not to mention the price of gas in Europe) and close proximity to the office means that I can easily walk or bike to work.   What a difference this makes in quality of life.  Lyon boasts a world-class mass transit system, links to France’s high speed rail network, and an innovative bike rental system that will soon be adopted by the City of San Francisco.  My new challenge is to determine how long I can go without buying a car!

Even in Lyon, the WTS connections are present.   I was delighted to see WTS members Alan Wulkan and Mike Schneider of InfraConsult LLC who were in Lyon to attend a transportation workshop on funding and public private partnerships.  The conference was co-sponsored by the US Federal Transit Administration.  Administrator Sherry Little represented the agency and the featured keynote was Representative Loretta Sanchez (D-CA).  Indeed, for several days, Lyon, France and Washington, DC seemed quite close!

The WTS International Board and staff have been busy preparing for the upcoming International Board meeting in Rhode Island on August 9.  In addition to our board agenda, the Board Members will attend a day of intensive board training to prepare for a productive two years.  This session builds on the excellent work on the Governance Project initiated by WTS Past President Ann Koby.

I was delighted with the response to our call for committee volunteers in May and June.  We are in the process of confirming committee chairs and assignments.  The caliber of volunteers- not surprisingly- is excellent, reflecting the breadth and depth of our wonderful organization.

Finally, I hope to see many of you at our Policy Seminar on September 11 in Washington, DC.  The agenda and speakers are strong and the topics are timely.

Until our next meeting, best wishes and thanks for all that you do in support of WTS.

-Elaine Dezenski
WTS International President
