For WTS, Fall is a time of Renewal
Many WTS members renew their annual membership dues in the fall. So, fall is a great time to remember why WTS is a valuable part of our lives and of the transportation industry. There is no better time to recognize the contribution each individual member and our 42 chapters make to the WTS community. We are fortunate to have so many members who work tirelessly so others can network, advance, be promoted, learn new skills, speak confidently, and assume chapter and international leadership positions. The best kept secret in WTS is that whatever you give in time and effort, you often get back tenfold. That has certainly been my experience. In my chapter visits, members continually tell me how much WTS is helping them to identify and expand their opportunities and networks.
The Call for Nominations for WTS leadership is now in progress, and many chapters are also seeking candidates for chapter boards and committees. If you’ve been thinking “I’m too busy,” “I’m not at that level yet,” or “I’m not the right person”…think again. WTS is the best venue for developing your skills because you are surrounded by people ready and able to help you while you help them. What you can learn as a committee chair, a board member or an officer is far more than just the tasks of each responsibility. Your horizons will expand and you will gain lots of strategic and tactical skills that will help you personally and professionally.
If you were among those who attended the 30th Anniversary Policy Seminar and Gala, you know that we had a truly incredible birthday event. If you missed it, I hope the photos included with this issue of the TranScript will give you at least a glimpse of our experience. Highlighting the evening dinner program was the presentation of the inaugural WTS Lifetime Achievement Award to the Honorable Mary Peters, U.S. Secretary of Transportation. Secretary Peters graciously accepted our award with a personal and meaningful reflection on her experiences as she rose in the industry and the role that WTS played in her professional and personal development. When we see people like Mary excel and combine skills and competence with perseverance and drive, we can’t help but be inspired ourselves. Those whom Mary has mentored often mention that she encouraged her colleagues to join and become active in WTS.
So I encourage you to follow Mary’s advice and example. This fall, renew your commitment to yourself and invest in your future by renewing your membership and taking that next step – get involved…and bring a friend along with you.
Sincerely,
Ann L. Koby
WTS International President
