Dear WTS Members, Friends, and Partners,
This newsletter focuses on the annual conference and the new strategic plan – two of our most important recent undertakings. So, I urge you to read on for the details.
The annual conference in San Diego was spectacular. It was great to see so many people and the programs, tours, speakers, events, and networking were beyond compare. Thank you Linda Culp, David Schumacher, the Conference Committee, the San Diego Chapter, and the WTS staff for all your efforts. I heard more than one person comment that WTS always has good sessions, but this year was even better.
I want to personally congratulate our 2007 award winners that were honored during the conference banquet: Jane Chmielinski, Woman of the Year; Amy Lewin, Member of the Year; San Bernardino Associated Governments, Employer of the Year; and Gloria Dixon, Rosa Parks Diversity Leadership Award.
The conference included the first WTS Scholarship walk. It was a multi-modal event where participants walked, rode a ferry, and took the bus. It was very successful and raised WTS scholarship funds. I have a feeling this will become an annual conference event.
The WTS International Board approved the 2007-2009 WTS Strategic Plan during its meeting. The strategic planning process was started in August 2006 and involved the International and Scholarship Boards, WTS Advisory Committee, and chapter leaders. The plan was unveiled to the various WTS entities and members during the conference. This plan outlines what we will accomplish over the next few years that will truly help WTS accomplish its mission of transforming the transportation industry through the advancement of women. Thanks to everyone for their hard work, but particularly to Elaine Dezenski, Diane James, Marcia Steele (our consultant), Transition Task Force members, and MBI Media.
WTS members passed several proposed revisions to the by-laws. These revisions included designating the WTS executive director as an ex-officio, non-voting board member; allowing the International Board to vote outside the quarterly board meetings; and allow WTS to use electronic voting. Barbi Stiles and her task force did a wonderful job revising the by-laws and thanks to everyone who took the time to vote on the changes.
The Charlotte, North Carolina Chapter was certified during the board meeting. This is our 42nd chapter and they have over 20 members. Welcome to the WTS family! Thanks Cyndi Alder for all your efforts.
One of my favorite presidential duties is chapter visits. I meet so many incredible people and learn so much from our programs. Since the conference, I have attended the Baltimore Chapter’s 25th Anniversary gala - a wonderful evening – and the Connecticut Valley Chapter’s luncheon, where we learned about transportation opportunities.
I want to remind everyone that we are planning a special event to continue to celebrate WTS’s 30th Anniversary. The September 18th WTS Gala, in Washington, DC, at Union Station will include an all-day summit followed by the gala. Don’t miss this spectacular event in the place where it all started 30 years ago!
Sincerely,
Ann L. Koby
WTS International President
