"Women Aim for State House: Patrick May Push Diversity"
Boston Herald (11/12/06) Goodison, Donna
A new administration in Massachusetts may bring with it greater opportunities for female involvement in state government. MassGAP, a bipartisan coalition of women's groups led by the state Women's Political Caucus, is now looking through the resumes of hundreds of women in search of candidates to fill more than 130 senior-level cabinet vacancies and top positions at other state government entities. "We would like fair representation for women," says Liz Levin, MassGAP's chairperson. "Since women are 52 percent of the population, it's about having half of the top positions." Levin notes that while former Gov. Mitt Romney was "caring about women's appointments," the percentage of top government posts filled by women is still low at around 30 percent. New Governor Deval Patrick recently named Gloria Larson, a MassGAP steering committee member, as one of the three leaders of a transition team that will be tasked with making personnel recommendations.

Dear WTS Members and Friends,
I hope that your holidays were wonderful and that 2007 brings you and yours lots of happiness. It is hard to believe that another new year is upon us – they seem to come around faster and faster.
WTS experienced many memorable events in 2006 and I thought this would be a good time to highlight a few of them.
* The WTS offices at 1701 K Street in Washington, D.C. were opened.
* Diane James was hired as our Executive Director.
* Margaret Mullins, Vernon Hemphill, and Larissa Norris were hired as part of the WTS team.
* The Central Virginia and Indianapolis chapters were established, for a total of 40 chapters.
* Memberships are over 4,400.
* Chapter Chatter is being published as a resource to the chapter leaders.
* The Career Center has been established to assist members and employers with employment opportunities.
WTS members are the core of our organization and long-standing WTS member Mary Peters became the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, which is the highest office to which any of our members have been appointed to date.
We will begin 2007 by co-hosting, with the TRB Committee on Women’s Issues in Transportation and PB, a reception during the annual TRB meeting on Sunday, January 21st, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Omni Shoreham. Members that are in Washington, DC attending TRB should stop by the WTS offices and meet the staff.
Other activities planned in 2007 are the chapter management training scheduled for February 23rd and 24th in Houston; finalizing the strategic planning process and implementing the resulting strategies; aligning the by-laws and policies with the WTS of today; and hosting the annual conference in San Diego, May 2nd – 4th.
I want to thank the WTS staff, Chapter leaders, International Board, International Committees, Scholarship Board, Advisory Board, corporate partners, and each member for all you do for WTS. I look forward to working with you during 2007.
Sincerely,
Ann L. Koby
International President
